\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSome opportunities don\u2019t just make you proud.\nThey make you reflective.\n\nBeing selected to speak at the\u00a0SAFe & AI Summit<\/strong>\u00a0this March, at the iconic\u00a0De Beurs van Berlage<\/strong>, is one of those moments for me. Not because of the stage, or the audience, or even the theme but because of\u00a0the story<\/em>\u00a0we get to tell.\n\nTogether with the Department Head of Online Interaction, Jacco Mulder<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0from the Dutch Tax Administration, I\u2019ll be sharing a leadership journey from one of the most challenging environments you can imagine to achieve Business Agility. An environment shaped by compliance, legacy systems, politics, and deeply rooted hierarchies. A place where you don\u2019t get to remove constraints easily, a place where you have to learn how to lead\u00a0with<\/em>\u00a0them.\n\nAnd that\u2019s exactly why this topic matters.\n

Scaling doesn\u2019t create flow but leadership does<\/strong><\/h3>\nOver the years, I\u2019ve seen many organisations invest heavily in frameworks, tooling, and structures, hoping flow will magically follow. Especially in large enterprises and government contexts, the belief is often that\u00a0better rules<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0more process<\/em>\u00a0will unlock agility.\n\nOur experience taught us something different.\n\nFrameworks don\u2019t create flow.\nLeadership does.\n\nThat insight didn\u2019t come from theory. It came from practice. From moments where rules were non-negotiable, compliance was a given and yet decisions still had to be made, teams still needed direction & autonomy and outcomes still mattered.\n\nWhat we learned and what we\u2019ll share at the summit, is how leadership shifts from rule-based execution to intent-driven decision-making. How clarity of intent (\u201cde bedoeling<\/em>\u201d) becomes a stabilizing force when formal authority alone no longer works. And how consciously choosing\u00a0how<\/em>\u00a0to lead can make the difference between stagnation and momentum.\n\nI won\u2019t give away the full story here (that belongs on stage) but I will say this: the biggest breakthroughs didn\u2019t come from adding new roles or processes. They came from leaders changing their behaviour and building an environment of psychological safety, trust and collaboration.\n

Why this journey deserves to be shared<\/strong><\/h3>\nWhat drives me personally to tell this story is not that it\u2019s perfect. It isn\u2019t.\n\nIt\u2019s candid. It includes what worked, what didn\u2019t and why certain choices had unintended consequences. We experimented with dual roles that combined hierarchy and functional responsibility. Sometimes that accelerated decision-making. Sometimes it exposed new tensions. And every time, it forced us to confront leadership paradoxes instead of trying to eliminate them.\n\nThat\u2019s a conversation I believe many organisations need right now.\n\nBecause complexity isn\u2019t going away.\nBecause constraints and compliance aren\u2019t disappearing.\nAnd because pretending they will only delays real progress.\n\nThis journey also reinforced something I deeply believe in: People Managers matter. Not as an extra governance layer, but as sensors of the undercurrent. Helping organisations anticipate earlier, align faster, and make better decisions when time and certainty are limited.\n\nThese are not abstract lessons. They are lived experiences from inside a system where leadership choices have real societal impact.\n

Why I\u2019m excited to tell this story\u00a0together<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\nTelling this story together with Jacco is essential. Leadership transformation doesn\u2019t happen from the outside in. It requires ownership from within the line, from leaders who are willing to reflect on their own role, their own assumptions and their own influence on the system.\n\nOur perspectives are different and that\u2019s exactly why they complement each other. It mirrors the very principle we\u2019ll be talking about: alignment through shared intent, not uniformity.\n
