Portfolio Management Lab
Organisations want to make better investment decisions and see their strategy carried through into what gets built. The models for this are well known. When it still runs badly in practice, the cause is rarely a lack of knowledge: strategy and portfolio are two separate conversations, everything has priority and nobody is quite sure who decides what.
The Portfolio Management Lab is a twelve-week learning journey for people who already know the craft. You work with the other roles that help decide on the portfolio: in-house on your own portfolio, in the open programme together on a shared example case.
You get a sharper view of customer value, build business cases that account for uncertainty and agree who decides what. We work with material from Applied Frameworks and with the role model of De Goede Werker. The Lab works with SAFe Lean Portfolio Management and with strategic portfolio management.
Taking part gives you access to the Connected community: knowledge exchange with peers, talks, webinars and round tables.
Who is this Lab for?
For professionals who steer the portfolio together. The group is mixed on purpose, because nobody does portfolio management alone. You will benefit most if you:
- are a portfolio manager or work in a PMO or VMO
- make investment decisions as an executive or business owner
- look after budget and accountability from finance or control
- lead initiatives from the portfolio as a programme or project manager
- bring in initiatives and business cases as a product manager or business analyst
- keep the overall coherence in view as an enterprise architect
- guide the change as a transformation leader, enterprise coach or LACE leader
The Lab does not explain a framework. You already know the basics and want them to work in your organisation.
What do you do during the Lab?
Twelve weeks, with three live half-days and a 90-minute online session in the other weeks. Every week you apply something in a short lab assignment.

Block 1: Sharpen (weeks 1 to 5)
- Week 1 (live): the portfolio on the table
- Week 2: from strategy to portfolio
- Week 3: who decides what, with the role model and the decision-rights map
- Week 4: making value visible with the Customer Benefit Cards
- Week 5: investing under uncertainty
Block 2: Choose (week 6)
- Week 6 (live): a played portfolio review with swapped roles and a limited budget
Block 3: Make it work (weeks 7 to 12)
- Week 7: flow and capacity
- Week 8: funding and governance
- Week 9: measuring and steering
- Week 10: AI-native portfolio management
- Week 11: making it stick
- Week 12 (live): present and commit
After the Lab
After twelve weeks you steer the portfolio in a visibly different way than at the start. You take away:
- a portfolio on one page, linked to strategy
- a decision-rights map: who decides, who advises and who executes
- a business case as a range, with the critical assumptions and a staged investment proposal
- a portfolio rhythm for review and steering, with the measures that go with it
- a 90-day plan with a sponsor
- access to the Connected community
