Tech Leadership Essentials: Team Flow Through Collaborative Software Design

Develop the skills to support teams, improve flow and effectively combine technical leadership responsibilities.

Tech Leadership Essentials: Team Flow Through Collaborative Software Design

Many professionals step into a technical leadership role without a clear picture of what is actually expected of them. The title may be the same, but what it means in practice varies considerably from one organisation to the next. That quickly raises the question of where to focus your attention. Do you concentrate on architecture? Help developers grow? Remove blockers for the team? Or try to do all of it at once?

That challenge grows as software development becomes increasingly automated. As implementation becomes easier, the value of a tech lead shifts more and more from technical execution towards supporting team effectiveness. The ability to facilitate collaboration, build shared understanding, provide technical direction and navigate team dynamics becomes ever more important.

Tech Leadership Essentials: Team Flow Through Collaborative Software Design helps participants develop these skills deliberately. The training brings together organisational thinking, collaborative software design and communication skills in a single, practical learning experience.

Over two intensive days, you work alongside peers facing similar challenges. Using Team Topologies, EventStorming, Domain Driven Design, active listening techniques and insights from Deep Democracy, you explore how to support teams without becoming a bottleneck yourself.

The emphasis throughout is on practical experience. The majority of the training consists of exercises, conversations, modelling and reflection on situations participants recognise from their day-to-day work.

Who is this training for?

This training is designed for software developers, engineers and technical professionals who are in a tech lead role, or preparing to move into one. Experienced engineers who are increasingly taking on responsibility for team guidance and technical direction will also find much that resonates with their day-to-day experience.

The training is also relevant for architects and technical leaders who want to support teams in decision-making, collaboration and software design. This is particularly true when the role shifts from solving problems yourself to enabling others to succeed — that is where new challenges tend to emerge.

Organisations looking to help their technical leaders grow in communication, collaboration and team development will find real value in this training.

Simply put: you want not only to understand what technical leadership means, but to learn how to put it into practice effectively.

What will you learn during this training?

On the first day, you explore the tech lead role within your own context. You examine responsibilities, software delivery flow, the four key flow metrics and the impact of team structures on software development. Using EventStorming and Team Topologies, you make visible how work actually flows through teams and where bottlenecks arise.

The second day focuses on supporting teams through collaborative design and communication. You explore the relationship between Domain Driven Design and business goals, work with EventStorming to build shared understanding, and examine how collaboration between stakeholders and technical teams can be improved.

You also spend time on the human side of technical leadership. Topics such as knowledge sharing, power dynamics, active listening, Socratic questioning, reflective listening and having crucial conversations are covered in depth. Theory is consistently combined with practical exercises, group discussions and peer learning.

After this training

You will have a clearer picture of how the tech lead role differs across organisations and how to consciously shape your own responsibilities within that context.

You will have gained practical experience in analysing team flow, applying Team Topologies, facilitating collaborative modelling and building shared understanding between technical and non-technical stakeholders.

You will also have developed communication skills that help you listen more effectively, ask better questions and support teams without becoming the central bottleneck yourself.

You can also become part of the Connected Movement community, where professionals share experiences, insights and real-world examples around software development, Agile, Lean, Portfolio Management and organisational development.

About the exam

There is no exam associated with this training. The focus is on developing practical knowledge and skills that can be applied directly in day-to-day practice.

Certification

On completion of this workshop, you will receive a certificate of participation, recognising your attendance and the topics covered around tech leadership, Team Topologies and collaborative software design.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to already be a tech lead to attend?

No. The training is suitable for both aspiring and current tech leads.

Do I need any prior knowledge?

You need at least five years of experience as a software engineer in a team environment. No other specific prior knowledge is required.

How practical is this training?

Around eighty per cent of the training consists of practice-based exercises, group work and reflection.

Is technical content also covered?

Yes, but the focus is on technical leadership. The training combines software delivery flow, Team Topologies and Domain Driven Design with communication and collaboration.

Is this training suitable for my organisation?

Yes. The training is deliberately designed to be context-independent, so that participants can apply the insights across different organisations and team structures.

Can this training also be delivered in-company?

Yes. This workshop works very well as an in-company training. When tech leads and senior engineers from the same organisation participate together, they develop a shared understanding of the tech lead role and a common language for collaboration, decision-making and team development.

Trainers with real-world experience

Participants particularly value the combination of practical experience, in-depth expertise and immediate applicability. Connected Movement training programmes are delivered by experienced practitioners who work daily within complex organisational environments.
