Investment and outcome estimation

Improve investment decisions through probabilistic estimation and forecasting under uncertainty.

Investment and Outcome Estimation

Many organisations make investment and prioritisation decisions based on single-point estimates. In practice, however, outcomes are often far less predictable than expected. This can lead to unrealistic expectations, inaccurate roadmaps and investments that deliver less certainty than originally assumed.

The Investment and Outcome Estimation training helps professionals and organisations make better decisions in the presence of uncertainty. You will learn how to work with ranges, probability distributions, Monte Carlo simulations and modern estimation techniques that are better suited to complex environments and changing circumstances.

Investment and Outcome Estimation: Essentials is a one-hour self-paced introduction to probabilistic estimation, forecasting and decision-making under uncertainty.

Investment and Outcome Estimation builds on the same self-paced foundation. You then apply the techniques to your own initiative, business case or investment challenge. An experienced practitioner reviews your work and provides personalised feedback, helping you apply the concepts directly to a real-world situation.

The Investment and Outcome Estimation Workshop is an instructor-led workshop tailored to your organisation’s context, investment challenges and portfolio priorities. It is particularly valuable for leadership teams, Lean Portfolio Management, PMOs and organisations looking to improve forecasting, prioritisation and investment decision-making.

Whichever format you choose, you will learn how probabilistic estimation helps improve product, portfolio and investment decisions while providing a more realistic way of dealing with uncertainty in complex organisations.

Who is this training for?

This training is designed for professionals involved in decision-making, forecasting, portfolio management and investment decisions in complex organisations. You will benefit most from this training if you:

  • are involved in product, portfolio or investment decisions
  • work with forecasting, planning or budgeting
  • want to improve decision-making under uncertainty
  • work within Lean Portfolio Management or Strategic Portfolio Management
  • are responsible for prioritisation or business cases
  • want to create more realistic expectations around investments and outcomes

Or simply put: you want to make better decisions in situations where uncertainty, dependencies and changing circumstances play a significant role.

What will you learn during this training?

During the training, you will learn why single-point estimates often lead to misleading plans and unrealistic expectations. You will discover how probabilistic estimation, ranges, probability distributions and Monte Carlo simulations help improve investment and portfolio decision-making.

In Investment and Outcome Estimation: Essentials, you will be introduced to the key concepts and techniques. In Investment and Outcome Estimation, you will apply these techniques to your own initiative, business case or investment challenge and receive personalised feedback from an experienced practitioner. In the Investment and Outcome Estimation Workshop, you will work with colleagues on real investment and portfolio challenges within your own organisation.

Topics covered include forecasting and estimation techniques, probability distributions, probabilistic estimation using ranges, J-curve investment modelling, Monte Carlo simulations and the application of these techniques within Lean Portfolio Management (LPM) and Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM).

After this training

By the end of the training, you will have a better understanding of how uncertainty affects forecasting, investment decisions and planning. You will be able to apply ranges and probabilistic techniques to create more realistic expectations and support better strategic decision-making.

You will also gain insight into how modern estimation techniques improve alignment between business, portfolio and delivery. In addition, you will understand how probability distributions, Monte Carlo simulations and J-curve investment modelling can be used to support investment decisions, prioritisation and expected outcomes.

You may also choose to become part of the Connected Movement community, where professionals share experiences, insights and practical examples related to Lean Portfolio Management, Product Management, Agile, SAFe, Leadership and digital transformation.

About the exam

Investment and Outcome Estimation: Essentials does not include an assessment and is designed as a short introduction to probabilistic estimation, forecasting and decision-making under uncertainty.

In Investment and Outcome Estimation and the Investment and Outcome Estimation Workshop, you will work on your own initiative, business case or investment challenge. An experienced practitioner reviews your work and provides personalised feedback, helping you apply the techniques directly to your own context.

The emphasis is not on a traditional exam, but on developing practical skills that create immediate value in product development, portfolio management and investment decision-making.

Certification

Upon successful completion of Investment and Outcome Estimation or the Investment and Outcome Estimation Workshop, you will receive a certificate of completion from Connected Movement.

Rather than completing a traditional exam, you will apply the techniques to your own initiative, business case or investment challenge and receive personalised feedback from an experienced practitioner. This approach ensures that you not only understand the concepts, but can also apply them directly in practice.

This approach ensures that you not only understand the concepts, but can also apply them directly to product development, portfolio management, investment decisions and strategic decision-making.

The Essentials option does not include certification and is intended as a short introduction to probabilistic estimation, forecasting and decision-making under uncertainty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the three options?

Investment and Outcome Estimation: Essentials is a one-hour self-paced introduction to probabilistic estimation, forecasting and decision-making under uncertainty.

In Investment and Outcome Estimation, you complete the same introduction and then apply the techniques to your own initiative, business case or investment challenge. An experienced practitioner reviews your work and provides personalised feedback.

The Investment and Outcome Estimation Workshop is an instructor-led workshop tailored to your organisation’s context. Together, you work on real investment and portfolio challenges and apply the techniques directly within your own environment.

Is this training mostly theoretical?

No. The training is highly practical. You will not only learn the underlying concepts, but also apply techniques such as probability distributions, Monte Carlo simulations and J-curve investment modelling to realistic scenarios.

Do I need any prior knowledge?

No. A basic understanding of product development, portfolio management, Agile or strategic decision-making can be helpful, but it is not required.

What types of organisations is this training relevant for?

This training is relevant for organisations that make investment decisions in environments characterised by uncertainty, dependencies and changing circumstances. Examples include organisations involved in product development, portfolio management, Lean Portfolio Management or strategic transformation initiatives.

Which roles is this training suitable for?

The training is relevant for Product Managers, Portfolio Managers, Epic Owners, Business Owners, PMO professionals, Lean Portfolio Management practitioners, leadership teams and other professionals involved in investment and prioritisation decisions.

Do you use Monte Carlo simulations during the training?

Yes. You will learn how Monte Carlo simulations help visualise potential outcomes and support better decision-making based on probabilities rather than fixed assumptions.

Is there an exam?

No traditional exam is required. In Investment and Outcome Estimation and the Investment and Outcome Estimation Workshop, you work on your own initiative, business case or investment challenge and receive personalised feedback from an experienced practitioner.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. Upon successful completion of Investment and Outcome Estimation or the Investment and Outcome Estimation Workshop, you will receive a certificate of completion from Connected Movement. The Essentials option does not include certification.

In which languages is the training available?

The training can be delivered in English, Dutch, German and French. Workshop sessions can be tailored to the preferred language and context of your organisation.
