Role Mapper Method: Role Map Workshop

Make roles, responsibilities and expectations visible.

Role Mapper Method: Role Map Workshop

Many collaboration problems don’t arise because people aren’t doing their jobs well — they arise because it’s unclear who is responsible for what. Roles grow over time, expectations shift and responsibilities change hands. What seems obvious to one person may not be obvious to another at all.

This often leads to frustration, duplicated effort, missed responsibilities or endless alignment conversations. In organisations that are growing, changing or introducing new ways of working, Role Clarity becomes increasingly important.

The Role Mapper Method: Role Map Workshop helps teams and departments make these ambiguities visible and open to discussion. Not by talking through an abstract organisational model, but by building a shared understanding of how roles relate to one another in practice.

Preparation is an important part of our approach. Prior to the workshop, we carry out an intake to explore the context, challenges and objectives of the team or department. This allows us to tailor the workshop closely to the day-to-day realities and the questions that actually matter.

During the workshop, participants get to know the Role Mapper Method, explore their own role and work together to create a role map for their team or department. The role map is shared digitally after the workshop and forms a practical starting point for further work on Role Clarity, ownership and collaboration.

Who is this workshop for?

This in-company workshop is designed for teams, departments and organisations that want to create greater clarity around roles, responsibilities and expectations. It is relevant for professionals who depend on good collaboration and clear decision-making in their day-to-day work.

The workshop is regularly used in Agile environments, change programmes, management teams and departments where multiple disciplines work together — including Scrum Masters, Agile Coaches, Product Owners, managers, team leads, consultants and other professionals involved in collaboration and organisational development.

The workshop is particularly valuable when responsibilities aren’t always clear, decision-making feels slow or people regularly seem to have different expectations of one another.

In short: you don’t just want to understand what Role Clarity is — you want to learn how to make it visible and open to discussion within your own team or department.

What do you do during the workshop?

Before the workshop, we carry out an intake to look together at the context, challenges and objectives of the team or department. This ensures the conversations and exercises during the workshop connect directly to the day-to-day reality of the participants.

During the workshop, you get to know the Role Mapper Method and the principles behind Role Clarity. You explore your own role, the expectations that come with it and how your role relates to other roles within the team or department.

You then work with colleagues to create a role map. This makes it visible how roles connect, where responsibilities overlap and where ambiguities exist. You receive the role map digitally after the workshop, so you can continue working with it within the department.

After this workshop

You understand how the Role Mapper Method helps to make roles, responsibilities and expectations visible and open to discussion.

You have a clearer picture of your own role and how it relates to other roles within the team or department. This often leads to greater understanding of each other’s responsibilities and a stronger basis for collaboration.

You also have a jointly developed role map that can serve as a starting point for further conversations and improvements within the team or organisation.

You can also become part of the Connected Movement community, where professionals share experiences, insights and practical examples around Role Clarity, Agile, Lean, Portfolio Management and organisational development.
