Business Owner & Epic Owner Masterclass
Many organisations invest significant time in strategy development, portfolio management and product development. Yet in practice, it is often difficult to translate strategic goals into initiatives that deliver visible value. Priorities shift, decision-making slows down, and teams find themselves dealing with conflicting signals from different parts of the organisation.
That is precisely why Business Owners and Epic Owners play such an important role. They sit at the intersection of strategy, investment decisions, portfolio management, product management and delivery. Their choices largely determine which initiatives get started, which investments are made, and how successfully organisations achieve their strategic goals.
This challenge is not unique to organisations working with SAFe. Organisations actively engaged in Strategic Portfolio Management, Lean Portfolio Management or large-scale product development recognise the same need for better alignment between strategy and delivery. The principles behind effective portfolio governance, investment and prioritisation apply well beyond any single framework.
In the Business Owner & Epic Owner Masterclass, you explore what it means to be effective in your role as a Business Owner or Epic Owner. You learn how the two roles reinforce each other, what collaboration with portfolio management and product management looks like in practice, and how to make better decisions that support the strategic objectives of the organisation.
Through practical exercises, realistic scenarios and group discussions, you develop insights that you can apply directly within your own organisation. The masterclass lasts six hours and can be attended virtually or in person. You are guided by a highly experienced trainer with extensive hands-on experience in large-scale Agile transformations and portfolio change. The focus is not just on theory, but above all on what works in practice.
Who is this training for?
This masterclass is designed for Business Owners, Epic Owners, Portfolio Managers and professionals involved in Lean Portfolio Management or Strategic Portfolio Management. It is particularly relevant for those responsible for investment decisions, prioritisation and the realisation of strategic objectives.
The workshop is particularly relevant for organisations working with SAFe and multiple Agile Release Trains. At the same time, the content applies more broadly to organisations looking to improve portfolio governance and strengthen the connection between strategy and delivery.
This training is particularly valuable when you notice tension between business and delivery, when priorities keep shifting, or when it is difficult to align investments, portfolio decisions and product development.
Or simply put: you want to do more than just own strategy or delivery — you want to learn how to connect both effectively.
What does the masterclass cover?
During this masterclass, you explore what it takes to be effective as a Business Owner or Epic Owner in a complex organisation. You gain insight into the responsibilities of both roles and learn how they contribute together to strategic alignment, investment decisions and portfolio execution.
You go deeper into topics such as Lean Business Cases, Portfolio Kanban, prioritisation, investment decisions and developing Epics with measurable business value. You also explore the relationship between Business Owners, Epic Owners, Portfolio Management and delivery within teams and Agile Release Trains.
Practical exercises, realistic examples and facilitated discussions help you apply the theory directly to your own working environment. You work through an intensive six-hour session with an experienced practitioner who has built their knowledge in large organisations and transformations. The focus is on improving collaboration, strengthening decision-making and reducing friction between strategy and delivery.
After this training
By the end of the masterclass, you will have a clearer understanding of how Business Owners and Epic Owners contribute to the realisation of strategic objectives. You will know how the two roles relate to each other and how they work alongside portfolio management and product management to create value for the organisation.
You will have a stronger grasp of portfolio flow, investment decisions and prioritisation. You will also better understand how Epics move through the Portfolio Kanban and how strategic choices can be translated into concrete initiatives and outcomes.
You will also have practical tools to improve collaboration between business and delivery, speed up decision-making and bring more strategic focus to your organisation.
You can also become part of the Connected Movement community, where professionals share experiences, insights and real-world examples around Strategic Portfolio Management, Lean Portfolio Management, Agile, Lean and organisational development.
